Throughout the fall, there have been a couple of competitive camp battles, be it at cornerback, receiver, or even on the offensive line. But one of the most interesting, and perhaps the most unexpected, ones has come at the quarterback position.
No, there isn’t any confusion about who the starter is going to be. That’s Colton Joseph. But the Badgers have been holding a competitive battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot between Louisville transfer Deuce Adams and true freshman Ryan Hopkins.
Adams, a rising redshirt sophomore, was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2024, and he committed to Louisville, where he redshirted his freshman season. He made his first career start last year in a 38-6 loss to SMU, where he completed 12 of 17 passes for 94 yards as the starter, Miller Moss, was out with an injury.
Adams then transferred to Wisconsin to serve as the backup for Joseph, with a chance to compete for the starting job in the future. He had a strong spring, with his arm talent standing out, while also showing some sneaky athleticism at 6’2, 207 pounds.
Hopkins, on the other hand, was one of the more surprising freshmen in the spring. A four-star recruit from Mater Dei High School in California, Hopkins had a strong spring as well compared to expectations, exuding confidence at the position with his decisions while showing he clearly still had some way to go to be ready to play.
In the Fall, though, that confidence has only grown into some more consistency, and he’s started to challenge Adams for the backup spot, leaving the coaches with an interesting decision: should they go with the high-upside true freshman as the backup, or the trusted redshirt sophomore?
So, in our weekly Reacts poll, we’re asking the same question: who should be the Badgers backup quarterback? Let us know in the poll above, while sharing your thoughts in the comments below!
