Head coach Madeline Wertish, now in her fourth year at the helm, is focused on rebuilding the team after losing standout athletes such as Telilie Lange, a midfielder recognized as a state Class AA All-State Second Team selection, and Kianna Eichhorst, a four-time All-Central Lakes Conference goalkeeper.
Last season, the Cardinals struggled, finishing with a record of 3-6-1 in the Central Lakes Conference (CLC) and an overall mark of 4-10-2. The departure of team captains Lange, Eichhorst, and senior defender Lily Jorgenson leaves a significant void. "We are losing some really good talent," Wertish acknowledged, emphasizing the importance of team chemistry as they move forward. "We have great camaraderie and team chemistry. It’s just figuring out what that looks like."
The Cardinals opened their regular season with a thrilling 4-3 victory against Fergus Falls on August 27, showcasing their potential despite the challenges ahead. However, the subsequent three matches proved difficult, as the team faced three consecutive shutouts. They suffered a 3-0 loss to Albany on August 31, followed by a staggering 9-0 defeat against Sartell the following night. The trend continued with a narrow 1-0 loss to St. Cloud on September 7.
Wertish is aware of the competitive landscape within the CLC, noting that teams like Sartell, which advanced to the state Class AA tournament last year, and Brainerd, which went undefeated in conference play, will pose significant challenges. Other formidable opponents include Alexandria, Rocori, and St. Cloud, all of which will test the Cardinals this season.
Despite the setbacks, there are bright spots for the Cardinals. Players such as Kylie Kowalczyk and Nelly Benitez have emerged as key offensive contributors. Kowalczyk's remarkable performance against Fergus Falls, where she scored a hat trick and assisted Benitez's goal, demonstrates the potential for a dynamic attacking duo. Additionally, senior midfielders Angie Alvarado Barrientos and Melani Maldonado Juarez are expected to play crucial roles in driving the team's offense.
On the defensive end, seniors Lily Bastin, Brenna Donelan, and Isabella Paulson will be essential in anchoring the back line. Meanwhile, Maya Cameron steps up as the new goalkeeper following Eichhorst's graduation. Cameron had a challenging outing against St. Cloud, making 20 saves, but her performance highlights her potential to grow into the role.
