Windber native Braxton Roxby makes MLB debut with Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (WTAJ) — Windber native Braxton Roxby made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants on Friday night in their loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-6.

Roxby entered the game in the ninth inning, with his family watching from the stands at Oracle Park. The relief pitcher tossed one inning and retired three straight batters, ending his night with his first strikeout that was almost taken away by the ABS system.

"I was pretty sure that it was good," Roxby said. "I've recently kind of switched over to the third base side of the rubber. I can usually tell pretty good if it was there or not. And I looked at [Drew] Cavanaugh. I was like, 'That was good, right?' And he was like, 'I don't know.' I was like, joking. So yeah, turned around and just kind of like, yeah, it was, it was hoping that it was there. But that was, that was awesome."

Roxby spent the majoirty of his time in the minor league system and had one season in AA as a pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. There, he managed to make an appearance against his hometown minor league team in the Altoona Curve, with his family in attendance.

The emotions of having them along for his journey to make his big league debut in San Francisco meant everything for him.

"That means the world to me. Honestly, at some point in my seven-year career so far in the minors. At some point, I felt like I was doing it for them and for everything that they sacrificed, and just to somehow express my gratitude to them," Roxby said. "As soon as I obviously got the call here, just calling them was huge. And just today, I couldn't get the jersey off my back quick enough to give it to my dad."
