Windsor returns arguably the best receiver in the state in New Haven Register/GametimeCT all-state first teamer Jayden Compton, who caught 64 passes for 1,435 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. The Warriors also return lead running back Rob McKinney (809 yards and five touchdowns on 117 carries) and Mark Henderson (200 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries). According to Fleeting, the offensive line is significantly bigger this year as well.
[Reason to Fear]The graduation of Register Player of the Year AJ Robinson (3,647 passing yards and 50 touchdowns against three interceptions, along with 11 rushing touchdowns last year) leaves a massive vacancy at quarterback, as does the transfer to Springfield Central of NHR first-team receiver Missoni Brown (68 receptions for 1,338 yards and 19 touchdowns, 233 yards and three touchdowns rushing). Charlie Lewis (453 yards and nine touchdowns on 29 receptions) also graduated.
[The Bottom Line]Rob Fleeting has reassumed command as the Windsor head coach after his son, Quinn, took over the job for one season and led the team to the Class MM state title, Windsor's first since 2015. Now, the two Fleetings have been reunited on the coaching staff in an attempt to "reload in place of rebuilding."
The loss of quarterback AJ Robinson and receiver Missoni Brown hurts, but Windsor still returns 11 starters. Rob Fleeting says there is a strong quarterback competition, with both candidates having the skills to compete.
The offensive line of Glenn Campbell (300 pounds), Don Anderson (260), Tyler Colapinto (250), Karon Drunnamanio (320), KyNiel Brown (280), Nemar Mars (275) should help protect whoever wins the job, and pave the way for returning running backs Rob McKinney and Mark Henderson.
It also helps to have star receiver Jayden Compton as a target for the new quarterback.
Defensively, Windsor returns six starters. Compton recorded the fourth most tackles on the team last year (51) while McKinney ranked fifth (42). Then again, the defense also graduated players that were responsible for 68 of the team's 84 total tackles for a loss.
Compton leads a secondary that includes McKinney, Barry Stephens and James Scott. Mark Henderson will be a key part of the defense at linebacker.
On top of it all, Windsor has been promoted to CCC Division I, giving it a schedule featuring a majority of conference's largest schools, among them perennial state playoff contenders New Britain, Glastonbury and Maloney. Windsor also gets a rematch with Southington, a Class LL finalist that tagged Windsor with its only loss last season, and renew acquaintances with St. Joseph in an Alliance showdown of Class MM contenders.
In other words, the road to a championship repeat won't be a pleasure cruise.
