In February meetings, the UW Athletic Board approved customary one-year extensions to Fickell's contract following the 2023 and 2024 seasons, maintaining the original seven-year contract length. However, Fickell did not receive an extension after the 2025 season, reportedly at his own request, which reduced his remaining contract length to six years. As of January 2026, he had yet to execute the approved extension from the previous year.
In terms of financial implications, Fickell's contract stipulates that if Wisconsin were to terminate his employment without cause, they would need to pay 80% of the remaining compensation or $6.8 million, whichever is greater. If he were to be let go on December 1, 2026, the buyout would amount to approximately $21.3 million. Should he be dismissed during the season, the buyout could range from $21.3 million to $22.8 million, depending on negotiations.
Fickell is also required to actively seek comparable employment if terminated, though he is not obligated to accept positions that may not align with his career interests. Should he secure a coaching role with an NFL team or another NCAA Division I program, the buyout amount would be adjusted based on his new salary.
Shawn Eichorst, the new athletic director, has expressed optimism for the upcoming season and emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of the football program. Eichorst has indicated a preference for allowing the season to unfold before making any coaching changes, underscoring the complexities of college athletics today.
Fickell's contract also includes potential bonuses based on the Badgers' performance in the 2026 season. To qualify for bonuses, Wisconsin must achieve at least six wins in the regular season, a threshold Fickell has not met in the previous two seasons. The bonus structure is tiered, with rewards increasing for each additional win, up to a maximum of $200,000 for a perfect 12-win season.
Should the Badgers achieve significant success, such as winning the Big Ten championship or reaching the College Football Playoff, Fickell stands to earn substantial bonuses, including $350,000 for a conference title and $200,000 for a playoff appearance. If Wisconsin were to win the national championship, Fickell could receive a total of $1.45 million in bonuses.
