Wolff Finally Ends the Verstappen Chase, Declares Mercedes Has the “Perfect Lineup”

For months, the Formula 1 paddock has been dominated by a single, burning question: Could Toto Wolff lure Max Verstappen away from Red Bull?

Ahead of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, that door was firmly slammed shut. Verstappen officially ended the relentless speculation by signing a massive multi-year contract extension, tying him to Red Bull Racing through the 2030 season.

While many expected the Mercedes camp to be disappointed by missing out on the 4x World Champion, Team Principal Toto Wolff insists the Brackley squad had already moved on.

Wolff’s “Perfect Lineup”

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 following Saturday’s Sprint race at Zandvoort, Wolff was asked if he was relieved to finally have the Verstappen conversation put to bed. The Mercedes boss made it clear that the team’s internal focus has been locked in on George Russell and rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli for quite some time.

“I think most important was that we had the clarity in the team since a long time with with with committed to George and Kimi,” Wolff explained.

Rather than viewing the Verstappen extension as a missed opportunity, Wolff sees it as a natural conclusion to the chaotic driver market. “In a way, you know, that was just a logical consequence, I guess, what happened now,” Wolff noted. “Silly season is now officially canceled now, and then everybody concentrate on the racing”.

When pressed on whether there was any lingering disappointment about failing to secure Verstappen’s signature, Wolff completely dismissed the notion.

“Ah no, not at all,” Wolff told the broadcast. “I mean, you know that we know each other well, and with Kimi and George, it’s the perfect setup that we have and the perfect lineup. So, there’s no disappointment”.

Verstappen Still in the “Family”

Even though Verstappen won’t be driving a Silver Arrow in Formula 1 anytime soon, Wolff still couldn’t resist a playful jab at his Red Bull rivals earlier in the weekend.

When asked about the new 2030 contract on Friday, Wolff joked that Verstappen is still technically part of the Mercedes ecosystem due to his extracurricular racing activities. Because Verstappen frequently drives Mercedes GT3 machinery in private tests and track days like his recent runs at the Nordschleife, Wolff teased that Mercedes still gets “the best of him” for important events, joking that the Dutch driver is “staying in the family.”

With the Verstappen rumors finally silenced and the silly season officially canceled, Mercedes can now fully dedicate its resources to developing its “perfect lineup” for the new regulatory era.
