COUNCIL BLUFFS — The 11th-ranked Indian Hills women's soccer team wrapped up its weekend trip to Council Bluffs with a convincing 4-1 victory over Illinois Central Community College on Saturday. The Warriors move to 1-0-1 overall on the year after opening the season with a 1-1 draw in the season opener against No. 20 Casper College at the Wiebe Complex on the campus of Iowa Western Community College on Thursday afternoon.
Indian Hills erased an early 1-0 deficit with four unanswered goals, including three in the final 27 minutes of action to secure its fourth consecutive win over the Cougars. Freshman Kieara Trujillo-Garcia paced the offense with two goals, including the eventual game-winner.
Sophomore Annabelle Combes anchored the defense in net for the Warriors, stopping a pair of shots to secure her 13th career victory. With the win, Combes moves into sole possession of fifth all-time in school history in career wins.
Illinois Central struck first with a goal in the 11th minute, but the Warriors responded less than 10 minutes later as sophomore Jenevieve Kuriki found the back of the net for her second career collegiate goal. Kuriki received a pas from Momoka Kinoshita before maneuvering past the Cougar defense for the long-range strike.
The two sides remained deadlocked at one until the 64th minute when Trujillo-Garcia buried a loose ball in front of the net for the go-ahead goal. Freshman Pamela Martin was credited with the assist.
Less than seven minutes later, Martin was on the finishing end of the Warriors' third tally as Kiah Cox and Sonia Rudolf teamed up near midfield to find Martin streaking through the Cougar defense. The freshman beat the Illinois Central goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.
Trujillo-Garcia capped the scoring for the Warriors at the 88:32 mark after a well-struck shot from the top of the box beat the outstretched arms of the Cougar keeper.
As a team, the Warriors tallied 22 shots in the victory with 15 attempts on net.
Freshman Victoria Yim netted the Warriors' first goal of the season to eliminate a 1-0 deficit early in the second period against Casper. The Indian Hills defense stood tall the rest of the way to earn the season-opening tie with the Thunderbirds.
The Warriors have now earned a result in 11 of the last 12 season openers, moving to 9-1-2 overall during the stretch.
Combes put up a valiant effort in net for the Warriors to earn the result, stopping eight shots over the course of the full 90 minutes of action. Casper struck first in the 18th minute after the Thunderbird offense corralled a loose ball at the top of the box, taking 1-0 lead into the second half.
The Warriors pushed the Thunderbirds to open the second half and finally struck paydirt at the 59:56 mark to even the match. Jenna Kaarina Vornanen and Pamela Martin eamed up in the box to find Yim in front of the net. The freshman buried the close-range strike for her first collegiate goal.
Indian Hills returns to action with its home opener against Snow College as part of the IHCC Classic. Kickoff on Aug. 29 is set for 11 a.m.
