India batted big in the first innings, spending the entirety of the first two days and four deliveries on the third, in the middle. Devdutt Padikkal (167) led the batting charge, scoring his maiden Test hundred after being drafted in for the injured Sai Sudharsan, as India posted 462.
The visiting spinners gave their side a great start, reducing Sri Lanka to 90-5 before Sonal Dinusha (100) and Niroshan Dickwella (80) resurrected the innings by adding 146 runs for the sixth wicket. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 284, with Manav Suthar taking four and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets. Jadeja also became the first left-arm India bowler to take 350 Test wickets.
