Wyndham Clark has claimed that he needs to win one of the final two FedEx Cup playoff events to stand a real chance of winning the PGA Tour Player of the Year award.

Clark is off to a flying start at the BMW Championship. The 32-year-old made five birdies in his final six holes at Bellerive to move into a tie for the lead as he reached the clubhouse on Thursday.

Of course, Clark is targeting his third win of the season this week.

Wyndham Clark assesses his chances of winning PGA Tour Player of the Year

It has certainly been one of the most open races for the PGA Tour Player of the Year in some time. Scottie Scheffler has had just one serious rival for the award in each of the last two seasons.

Scheffler is in the mix once again, having won twice and registered 12 top five finishes. Meanwhile, the likes of Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, and Chris Gotterup have all registered multiple victories.

Interestingly, Wyndham Clark is the only player to have won more than once this year with one of those victories coming in a major. Obviously, Clark won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in June.

Nevertheless, when asked about his chances of winning the Player of the Year title, Clark suggested that he has got more work to do.

“That I have not thought about. Obviously everyone says, you know, focus here on the moment. That would be amazing,” he said.

“I probably would have to get a win here or next week to I think really be considered. But I’m really focused on playing good this week and hopefully making the Presidents Cup team.”

Clark targeting qualifying for the Presidents Cup automatically

Despite his incredible run earlier in the season, Clark is actually outside the top six in the qualification standings for the Presidents Cup team.

Clark sits seventh heading into this week, which is the final event before the top six is locked in.

You would imagine that Brandt Snedeker will pick him regardless. But Clark admitted that it would mean a great deal if he can sneak into that top six at the final hurdle.

“I would prefer to be an automatic qualifier because then I don’t want to leave it up to chance. So that’s definitely on my mind a little bit,” he said.

“I would love to try to get into that fifth or sixth spot. But, yeah, at the same time as long as you make the team it doesn’t matter if you’re one or 12.”

Having not been on the American team for the 2025 Ryder Cup, it will be particularly satisfying for Clark when he features at Medinah next month.

His challenge then will be to sustain his impressive run for a much longer period than he did after his first US Open victory in 2023.
