Fellow linebacker Amare Campbell, who played alongside Gilliam at Penn State last season, praised his teammate's performance, calling it "the standard." Gilliam's impressive stats included three sacks and five tackles for loss, making him the first UT defender to achieve such numbers since Darrell Taylor recorded four sacks in a game back in November 2018. Additionally, Gilliam forced a fumble and tied with Campbell for the team lead in tackles with six.
The No. 18-ranked Volunteers (1-0) relied heavily on their defense to stifle Furman, as they collectively recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss throughout the game. This defensive effort was a notable improvement for Tennessee, which had a season-high of six sacks in a game last year against Mississippi State. Gilliam's relentless pursuit of the quarterback played a pivotal role in this performance, particularly during a crucial first-quarter drive that saw him single-handedly disrupt Furman's offensive momentum.
