Yankees Announce Decision on ‘Ichiro-Like’ Outfielder Before Astros Series Opener

The New York Yankees have won six of their last seven games, including an 8-3 win over Toronto on Sunday.

On Tuesday, they open a three-game series against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium, looking to keep the momentum going.

Before that series opener, the Yankees’ farm system delivered news on a 23-year-old outfield prospect who has started drawing informal comparisons to Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki.

The New York Yankees organization placed Luis Durango on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Somerset on Monday, according to the Somerset Patriots’ official transactions. No cause or expected return date has been disclosed.

The decision is a tough break for a player who spent most of 2026 turning himself from organizational filler into one of the system’s more talked-about names — talked about enough that his name is now getting mentioned alongside baseball royalty.

Durango signed with the Cleveland Indians as an international free agent out of Panama City, Panama, in 2019, before he’d turned 17, according to the recruiting database The Baseball Cube. A canceled 2020 minor league season pushed his debut back a year, and once he got on the field in 2021, production came fast, with a .308 average, 28 steals and the three home runs that remain the only ones of his pro career, across 46 games with Cleveland’s rookie-level Arizona affiliate.

Three seasons in Single-A followed, and the bat cooled off considerably, dipping to a .238 average from 2022 through 2024. Cleveland moved on, and New York claimed him in the Triple-A phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft that December, according to MLB.com‘s official player transaction log. A rough follow-up season limited him to just 45 games in 2025, mostly as a late-inning substitute, and a Spring Training injury this year wiped out most of April, sending him to Single-A Tampa on a rehab assignment.

The rehab stint became a launching pad. Durango batted .313 at Tampa, then hit .347 over a 32-game stretch at Hudson Valley, earning a promotion to Somerset in late July, Yankees On SI‘s Michael Zeno reported. He’s stolen 43 bases in 54 tries this season, struck out just 11.5% of the time and hit the ball on the ground at a 65.6% clip, among the highest marks in the minors.

Professional coverage of that skill set has mostly reached for Tampa Bay Rays leadoff man Chandler Simpson as the comparison, casting Durango as an even more extreme version of Simpson’s slap-hitting, ground-ball-heavy approach. The Ichiro references have come from a different corner entirely, namely fans reacting online to video clips of Durango’s running-start, flat-swing style, including replies to Somerset Patriots social media posts and MiLB highlights invoking Ichiro by name.

Commenters note Ichiro built a Hall of Fame case on elite defense, a historic arm and real extra-base pop, including 117 career home runs, while Durango has hit zero home runs as a professional since 2021. Durango isn’t ranked on the Yankees’ Top 30 prospect lists at Baseball America, MLB Pipeline or Prospects Live, and the organization appears to view him as a speed-and-contact bench option who still has to prove his approach translates above Double-A.
