Coming into the season, Wells had a career batting average of .224 and a .717 OPS. Despite showing potential with 20 home runs last season, his early struggles this year led to concerns about his role on the team. The Yankees even explored trade options for a catcher but were unable to secure a deal. This left Wells competing for playing time with Ali Sánchez, further complicating his situation.
However, since the start of July, Wells has shown marked improvement, boasting a .238 batting average and a .740 OPS, along with six home runs. His resurgence has been particularly vital for the Yankees, who are currently missing star players Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. In a recent game, Wells provided a pivotal two-RBI single in extra innings, showcasing his ability to deliver in clutch situations.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Wells' contributions, stating, "You feel like he’s that threat again down there. That’s massive." "I’m always trying to get extended with where I’m receiving the ball.
