YANKTON, S.D. — As the football season heats up, so do the temperatures across KELOLAND, prompting high schools to adapt their game strategies for Friday night’s matchups. The forecast predicts soaring highs in the mid-90s, which has led teams to reconsider their approach to the games, particularly the anticipated clash between the Yankton Bucks and the Pierre Governors.
Last year, the Pierre Governors claimed the state title against the Yankton Bucks with a decisive 56-35 victory. Both teams have kicked off the current season on a strong note, each securing a win in their opening games. The Governors showcased their dominance with a commanding 42-6 victory over Sturgis Brown, while the Bucks also delivered a powerful performance, defeating Aberdeen Central 48-11.
With the extreme heat expected on Friday, coaches are taking precautions to ensure their players remain safe and effective on the field. The kickoff for this highly anticipated matchup has been pushed back to 8:00 PM, allowing for slightly cooler conditions as the sun sets.
Pierre Head Coach Steve Steele expressed his hope that the heat wouldn’t disrupt their practice routines too significantly. “The hottest day of the week is going to be Friday probably, so hopefully that doesn’t change our practices too much and we’re able to get accomplished what we need to go down there and play a good game on Friday,” Steele stated.
Meanwhile, Yankton Head Coach Brady Muth emphasized the importance of managing the heat as part of their game plan. “We don’t want the heat to be part of the game plan. We want to take care of that from our coaches’ point of view and make sure that our players are put in a good position to have success on Friday night and have enough juice to get there,” Muth remarked.
As both teams prepare for this critical matchup, the impact of the weather on their performance will be closely monitored. The Bucks and Governors, both eager to maintain their winning momentum, will face off under challenging conditions that could influence the outcome of the game.
