Zach Wilson begins to take QB2 reps from Saints backup Spencer Rattler

It's too soon to call it an open competition, but Zach Wilson is beginning to take practice reps from New Orleans Saints backup Spencer Rattler. He rotated in with the second-team offense during Thursday's joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams and completed some nice throws against a good defense, including this high-flying pass over the top to wide receiver Trey Palmer.

That's exactly what some Saints fans have been looking for after Wilson impressed in the first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Rattler had an edge through two weeks of training camp practices but Wilson outplayed him in a real game situation. Now that's earning him more opportunities in these joint practices. And by the look of it, he's making the most of them.

Could Wilson replace Rattler on the 53-man roster? Maybe. The Saints brought him in after having had a full season to evaluate Rattler in Kellen Moore's system and he's had chances to narrow the gap between them. He'll get more of them with two preseason games left on the schedule. If New Orleans doesn't hold onto Wilson, another team might snap him up.
