The Los Angeles Lakers have bolstered their roster for the 2026-27 NBA season by signing forward Ziaire Williams to a one-year, $3 million contract. Williams, who previously played for the Brooklyn Nets, is expected to provide valuable depth at the wing position, particularly as a lob threat. In the 2025-26 season, he averaged 10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, showcasing his potential as a versatile player.
In an interview with Benjamin Royer from the OC Register, Williams elaborated on his decision to join the Lakers, emphasizing the opportunity it presented. He stated, “I just thought it was a great opportunity. Being that big wing, versatile player that they needed, I just thought it was a great opportunity for me to be a Laker.” Williams expressed that the chance to play in Los Angeles, close to his family and friends, made the decision even more appealing.
Williams has been in discussions with Lakers management, including JJ Redick and Rob Pelinka, regarding his role on the team. He highlighted that his primary responsibility will be as a defender, particularly at the point of attack. “Obviously Luka (Doncic) and AR (Austin Reaves) are going to be the main primary ball handlers,” he noted, adding that he will focus on playing off them by shooting, cutting, and making plays in transition.
The young forward also shared his impressions of his new teammate, Luka Doncic, describing him as having “big kid energy, like a young, youthful spirit.” Williams appreciates Doncic's leadership qualities and his commitment to winning. “I can tell (Doncic’s) leadership. He wants to step up even more this year,” he remarked, expressing excitement about the opportunity to play alongside him. Williams believes that Doncic's style of play will simplify his own game, stating, “He’s going to make my life a lot easier for sure.”
During a recent team-building trip to Slovenia, Williams mentioned that activities like rowing on Lake Bled and bowling with teammates helped to strengthen their bond. He noted that these experiences would positively translate to their performance on the court. The team had the chance to engage in five-on-five basketball in Ljubljana, while also connecting during the summer league in Las Vegas.
A significant highlight for Williams this season is the chance to reunite with Bronny James, a former teammate from Sierra Canyon High School. Williams expressed gratitude for this opportunity, saying, “That’s my brother. I’m definitely grateful for that.” He praised James for his progress over the summer, stating that they have been working together on offensive and defensive strategies.
As the 2026-27 season approaches, Williams has been focusing on improving his shooting and finishing at the rim, describing his workouts with James as a “great” preview of what’s to come. He is optimistic about the team's potential, stating, “We have a bunch of guys that can do a lot of things on the court. I think we’re going to be great, man.” With the season set to tip off in less than two months, fans are eager to see how Williams integrates into the Lakers' rotation and contributes to their quest for success.
