New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has responded to concern about exorbitant US Open ticket prices by securing a major win for the city’s tennis fans.
Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, is a polarising figure nationally. However, many approve of his work in his short term in charge of the city so far.
On the sports front, the New York Knicks winning in his very first year in his position has been great for Mamdani’s image. He also played a prominent public role during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
And now tennis fans in New York are getting a taste of what his being mayor can do for them. Mamdani has been able to secure several cheaper US Open tickets for residents of the city.

Ticket prices across major sports have been going up, but resale prices for tickets in 2026 in this case have raised a lot of alarm.
Mamdani has stepped in to listen to what tennis fans in his jurisdiction want, with The Athletic reporting his success in managing to give local residents a way to watch matches for a reasonable price.
“New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has responded to public concern over surging U.S. Open ticket prices by securing 1,000 ‘affordable’ tickets for the tournament, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to local residents,” The Athletic reported.
“Later on Tuesday, Mamdani will announce that New York City residents will be able to buy $100 tickets for main-draw matches taking place between Aug. 30 and through Sept. 8.
“The tickets made available will include seats in the two biggest show courts, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, as well as grounds passes.”
Having the opportunity to watch some of the biggest names in tennis play up until the quarter-final stage is quite exciting for fans. As far as the city’s tennis-loving population is concerned, this will likely earn Mamdani a lot of goodwill.
