49ers place RB on season-ending IR and re-sign recently released RB

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday placed running back Patrick Taylor on season-ending injured reserve ahead of their preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Veteran RB Khalil Herbert was signed in a corresponding move.

It's unclear what injury Taylor suffered or when he sustained it. He was active in the team's first preseason game and figured to once again be active Thursday with Christian McCaffrey and Jordan James still on the sidelines. Taylor's season is now over with his placement on IR with no return designation.

Herbert will step back in after being released Monday. He had six carries for 18 yards and two receptions for 35 yards in the 49ers' preseason opener vs. the Tennessee Titans.

While rookie Kaelon Black should be in the mix for the 49ers on Thursday night, Herbert should see another heavy workload.

The 49ers and Chargers kick off from SoFi Stadium on Thursday at 7:00pm.
