Arizona Cardinals CB Garrett Williams 1 step closer to return from Achilles tear

The Arizona Cardinals are closer to getting one of their top defensive backs back. Cornerback Garrett Williams, who suffered a torn Achilles late last season and has been on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list since the start of training camp, was activated and cleared for practice.

With more than three weeks remaining until the regular season, he now has time to ramp up and potential make it back for a Week 1 return that head coach Mike LaFleir said was possible.

Williams, entering the final year of his contract, was fantastic in 2024 as the team's slot corner, ranking analytically as one of the best in the league. Last season, though, he struggled with injuries. He injured his knee and missed six games before returning for eight more games before he tore his Achilles in December.

In 10 games, he logged 46 total tackles, five pass breakups, one forced fumble and one interception.

His coverage numbers when targeted weren't great last year. He was targeted 35 times and allowed 28 receptions and five touchdowns, as many as the passes he broke up.

Once healthy, he will go back to being the Cardinals' starting nickel corner. In the meantime, Sean Murphy-Bunting has been holding down that job.

Because he has been activated from PUP, he will occupy a roster spot at final roster cutdowns, whether he is ready to play or not, unless they place him on injured reserve.

Linebacker Josh Sweat and tight end Tip Reiman remain on PUP. Reiman isn't expected to be ready for the start of the season.
