5 Dolphins to watch in joint practice with Commanders

The Miami Dolphins had a travel day on Tuesday, as the moved up the coast from South Florida to the BigBear.ai Peformance Center in Ashburn, Virginia for a joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Wednesday.

Both teams will work on the fields against each other and compete before they meet on Friday for Miami's first preseason game under head coach Jeff Hafley.

With this training camp session just hours away, let's take a look at which Dolphins we should watch on Wednesday.

Miami brought in Willis this offseason on a three-year, $67.5 million contract to be their starting quarterback, and they hope he'll prove himself to be someone that they can build around. Through the first 10 sessions of camp, Willis has been solid, but Miami's secondary isn't exactly the toughest task. It will be interesting to see how the former third-round pick performs against another unit.

Savaiinaea was the worst guard in the league in 2025, and Pro Football Focus even went as far as to give him the lowest grade at the position in 20 years. Now that's he's flipped back to the right side this year, he's reportedly looked and felt more comfortable so far. This will be a good first test.

The first of three wide receivers that Miami took in the 2026 NFL draft has looked like a hit so far in camp, showcasing some real talent early on. While he had some issues with drops, he's been able to get open with ease against the Dolphins secondary. Can he do the same against Washington's?

It's hard to find a defensive rookie who's getting as much love as Rodriguez has since the Dolphins took him in the second round back in April. Miami's first depth chart had him listed as a fringe starter, and if Rodriguez does well in this joint practice and preseason game, he could take Tyrel Dodson's job by Week 1.

As previously mentioned, the Dolphins don't exactly have a shutdown secondary in 2026. However, first-round pick Chris Johnson could be a real difference-maker. He's had some strong moments in camp, and he's also made some rookie mistakes. Not only will it be interesting to see how he fares, but where he lines up is just as notable/
