Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was hit with a one-in-400-million event after his new Philadelphia penthouse was struck by lightning 20 minutes after he and his wife signed the lease to move in.
Caldwell-Pope joined the 76ers to be a floor-spacing three-and-D option for the franchise with championship expectations after acquiring LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in the offseason.
Pope is an NBA journeyman but hopes to become a three-time champion with the 76ers, although his stay in Philadelphia has gotten off to a troubled start.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s new house struck by lightningCaldwell-Pope’s wife, McKenzie Pope, shared the entire ordeal on Instagram, revealing that the house was struck by lightning minutes after they signed the lease, with water pouring in around the house after the lightning strike.
“Minutes after I signed the lease, you guys, I hear the loudest bang I’ve ever heard in my life. Mind you, we’re on the penthouse floor, we’re on the highest floor, okay? I hear the loudest bang, all of a sudden — starts shooting out of the ceiling, and water is pouring in, dumping in.”
“So everyone just starts screaming and we’re like we have to get out of here. When I say what’s coming in it was like there was at least 2-3 inches of water in there before we even got out. We were like we have to go.”
Photo by Chris Gardner/Getty Images“So then hours later the electricians come, they’re like trying to fix everything, they turn off the sirens and all that and they say after everyone was denying that I heard what I heard why did the electrician say, ‘Yeah, you got struck by lightning and there’s a 1 in 400 million chance of a unit getting struck the way this unit got struck.’”
Whether this story is as accurate as Pope claims is unconfirmed, but superstitious fans and players are already worried about this being an ominous sign.
Some are already drawing parallels to when Kelly Oubre Jr. had a bike crash soon after signing with the 76ers, joking about the 76ers potentially being cursed for wing signings.
Hopefully, LeBron and Brown can be luckier than Pope, who literally went through one of the rarest ordeals a homeowner could face, although a penthouse would be the most likely property to be struck by lightning.
