I can understand why though. Asking a team to change its stripes this dramatically in the middle of the season is a difficult thing to do. The Phillies taking more walks, getting more hits and scoring more runs couldn’t just be a thing that happens overnight. Perhaps it’s the idea that Kevin Long has pounded into their heads all season, only for them to suddenly realize it’s a great way to win baseball games.
However, the big test is still to come. Having all of this success in the regular season is great because it allows them to continue on their quest to get into the postseason, but carrying it over into the postseason games is another thing altogether. We have seen this offense crumble once the lights get brighter, so if we really want to think this is going to be a meaningful change in how they approach at bats, we have to see it once the pitching is at its best.
