Big second half powers Texas Southern football to season-opening win over North Carolina Central

Cam'Ron McCoy threw three touchdown passes and Athean Renfro Jr. rushed for 163 yards and a score as Texas Southern dominated the second half to beat North Carolina Central 42-30 in the teams' football season opener Saturday at Thorne Stadium.

The Tigers overcame a 14-0 deficit after the first quarter and 24-14 halftime hole, outscoring the Eagles 28-6 in the second half.

McCoy's 45-yard touchdown pass to Ronyon Richardson a little over a minute into the second half cut the deficit to three points. TSU then took its first lead after Jordan Thompson returned a blocked punt 34 yards to take a 28-24 advantage with 9:47 left in the third quarter.

After Central got within a point, Renfro's 14-yard touchdown run extended the lead to 35-27 late in the third quarter.

Central got within 35-330 but Jacob Washington's 20-yard touchdown run with 2:07 remaining in the game iced the Tigers' win.

TSU outgained Central 462 yards to 321, with 277 of the Tigers' yards coming on the ground.

Next up for the Tigers will be the Labor Day Classic on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Prairie View A&M. The game will kick off at 11 a.m. and air on ESPN2.

Tarleton State 49, Prairie View A&M 30

Kaden Anderson passed for three touchdowns and Tylan Hines ran for two as Tarleton State cruised past Prairie View A&M to open the season in Stephenville.

A Tevin Carter touchdown run got the Panthers within 28-20 with 23 seconds left in the first half but the Cowboys responded with two touchdowns in the first seven-plus minutes of the third quarter to open up a 22-point lead and coasted from there.

Carter was 25-of-40 passing for 309 yards and threw a TD pass to Jahbari Kuykendall. Carter also rushed for 130 yards, including a 48-yard carry.

The teams piled up the yards, with 519 for the Panthers and 505 for the Texans.
