Bossier High's Marcus Hudson receives top assistant coaching award

Bossier High defensive coordinator Marcus Hudson received the ultimate honor for a Bossier Parish assistant coach Monday, Aug. 24 during the annual Bossier Lions Club Coaches Dinner at Airline Baptist Church. He was awarded the Kevin Black Bossier Parish Assistant Coach Award joining an ever-growing list of quality assistants.

Hudson, doubtless, will be standing a little taller Friday at the Bossier Lions Club Jamboree.

“I am extremely honored to win this award,” Hudson said. “This award means a lot to me as a person who grew up in Benton, a Bossier Parish kid. God has blessed me to be able to do what I love every day.”

Hudson was nominated by Bearkat football coach Gary Smith.

“Marcus is very professional,” Smith said. “Players love him and he is in the profession for the right reasons. He will be a successful head coach.”

Kevin Black was emblematic of how an assistant coach should serve his school. A former Parkway assistant coach, Black died in 2021, but thanks to a group of current and former Shreveport-Bossier area teachers and coaches, Black’s name is being remembered with the award.

“I’m thankful to all the coaches who helped me get to this point in life, so it’s my reasonable service to give my all to the students of this amazing school district that made me who I am today,” Hudson said.

In addition to running the Bossier defense in the fall, Hudson is the school’s powerlifting coach and will return to the softball coaching staff in the spring.

Previous recipients of the award include Hal Harlan of Haughton, the inaugural winner in 2023, Sean Koeppen, formerly of Plain Dealing, in 2024 and Chris Kennady of Parkway last year.

Hudson’s name was engraved on a plaque that has a spot for 29 additional names, and he received a $500 stipend. The award is presented annually at the Lions Dinner, which is held to recognize all Bossier Parish coaches and administrators prior to Friday’s jamboree at Airline High.
