LAS VEGAS — Carson Beck, the star of last week’s Hall of Fame Game, will miss his chance to make a follow-up impression. Beck has been ruled out of the Arizona Cardinals’ preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, Aug. 13, NFL Network reported.
Beck suffered a rib injury against the Carolina Panthers in the teams' preseason opener, per the report. The third-round rookie finished that game, completing 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown.
Beck’s injury, though, does not appear to be particularly serious. He practiced all week and participated in 11-on-11 drills seemingly without limitations as the Cardinals wrapped up training camp. But — unlike in a live game setting — there is no tackling in practice, so, as a precaution, the Cardinals are holding him out.
Head coach Mike LaFleur had already announced that starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett will play against the Raiders. Behind him, the Cardinals will now turn to Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis.
It’s likely that Beck would have been the third-string quarterback behind Brissett and Minshew regardless — as he has been throughout training camp — but his performance last week could have potentially earned him some reps with the second team.
Now, that opportunity will have to wait another week, until the Cardinals take on the Dallas Cowboys in their lone preseason home game on Aug. 22.
