The North Carolina Tar Heels are entering the second year of the Bill Belichick era with a lot of questions to be answered. To put it in simple terms, the first year was a complete disaster and so far it hasn't gotten much better.
Right before the Tar Heels opened up training camp, general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid leave by the university. Shortly after that, it was revealed that defensive coordinator Steve Belichick hasn't been around the team as he's dealing with some sort of illness.
While they have yet to play a game, it feels like the Tar Heels are playing behind here in training camp. North Carolina is going to have to have a big year and win some games to make things right again. But one college football analyst doesn't believe that will happen.
On a recent episode of the "Josh Pate Show" the host discussed the Belichick era so far and he believes it will 'soon be over' with and rips the coaching search in the process:
“Now, one situation that's a lot clearer to me is North Carolina," Pate said. "Bill Belichick, significant disaster actually. It's a significant disaster. So this is soon to be pusher-broomed out, and then the North Carolina job opens up. Not much to say here. It's a move that never should have happened. It's a joke of a coaching search and the way it was handled.”
Pate then went on to rip the university for how they handled the coaching search. When UNC had the opening, they were tied to both Matt Campbell and Jon Sumrall. But neither got the job and instead it felt like the Tar Heels were going to push for Belichick no matter what.
We will see if Pate is right or not, but the bottom line for UNC is that they need Belichick to start winning games.
