The Indianapolis Colts' secondary isn't starved of talent, but PFF wants to see more before placing the group in the thick of the NFL's best.
PFF ranked the Colts No. 16 among all 32 secondaries entering 2026, putting Indianapolis squarely in the middle of the league.
The hesitation starts with last season. PFF noted the Colts allowed more explosive pass plays of 15-plus yards than any NFL defense in 2025.
PFF's Daire Carragher also acknowledged how difficult Indianapolis is to evaluate because its current secondary has barely played together.
"This is a difficult secondary to place, so I’ve dropped them right into the middle of the pack," Carragher wrote.
Sauce Gardner gives the Colts a chance to outperform that ranking. Indianapolis acquired him during the 2025 season, pairing the All-Pro with Charvarius Ward. But injuries limited the duo to one full game together.
Justin Walley is also back after missing his rookie season with a torn ACL, while rookie A.J. Haulcy currently sits atop the depth chart at strong safety; veteran Cam Bynum is listed at free safety.
With Gardner, Ward, Walley, Haulcy and Bynum in the mix, No. 16 feels more like a cautious projection than a verdict on the Colts' true potential.
