Commanders' injury updates ahead of preseason Week 1

The Washington Commanders host the Miami Dolphins for a joint practice on Wednesday. The two teams meet again on Friday in the preseason opener.

Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Tuesday that the Commanders will be without a couple of starters for both the practice and the game.

First, Quinn discussed center Nick Allegretti, who strained his calf on Day 1 of training camp.

"Nick will be back," Quinn said. "He'll be out for practice tomorrow and in the game, but hopefully Sunday is the return to start with him. So that’s kind of where we're at."

Quinn seemed more positive on Allegretti than he had been recently. The Commanders initially expected him to be out only a week, but that was extended by another week. Allegretti was on the practice field with his helmet on Tuesday, interacting with his teammates.

Next, Quinn discussed cornerback Trey Amos. The second-year player began training camp on the physically unable to perform list due to last season's fractured fibula. He returned to practice last week, but was only on the field for two days until he landed awkwardly on his ankle in Saturday's practice.

Quinn offered the latest update on Amos:

"He will be out kind of like for — we're still assessing where it is," Quinn said. "He kind of fell awkwardly on his ankle. He'll be out tomorrow. He'll be out for the game on Friday. And I'll give you a better timeline the next time we huddle up that Sunday or Monday. Is he closer? I'll have a better sense then."

Quinn didn't seem quite as positive on Amos. It doesn't sound like a long-term issue, but when you consider the time he's already missed, it's not ideal.

As for the third Washington starter, tight end John Bates, Quinn didn't offer an update. He did recently say that Bates was progressing toward a return and has been working on the side. Bates' injury isn't serious, but it doesn't sound like he'll be available for the practice or preseason game either. He doesn't need the work as much as other players.
