CORNELIUS, N.C. — The Bailey Road Park tennis complex in Cornelius has achieved national recognition by receiving the 2026 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Facility Award. This award highlights the facility's excellence in the Large Public Facilities category, showcasing its commitment to promoting tennis in the community.

Opened in October 2025, the expanded Bailey Road Park features 12 lighted courts, a significant upgrade from its original six-court layout. The transformation of the facility was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the town of Cornelius, USTA, USTA Southern, USTA North Carolina, and the Lake Norman Tennis Association. These partnerships provided essential financial support, allowing the town to enhance its tennis offerings significantly.

Since its opening, the Bailey Road Park complex has quickly established itself as a central hub for tennis in the Lake Norman area. It caters to players of all ages and skill levels, providing a range of opportunities that include instructional programs, social events, junior and adult league play, and school-based tennis initiatives. The facility also hosts tournaments, fostering a competitive spirit while encouraging newcomers to engage with the sport.

Parks Director Troy Fitzsimmons and Assistant Director Adam Abernathy proudly accepted the award during a ceremony held at the U.S. Open in New York. Their presence at such a prestigious event underscores the importance of the award and the recognition of the facility's impact on the local community.

In addition to its tennis offerings, Bailey Road Park is equipped with various recreational amenities, including soccer fields, ballfields, disc golf courses, and a bandshell, making it a versatile destination for outdoor activities. The park's comprehensive facilities not only promote tennis but also encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among residents.

The USTA Outstanding Facility Award serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Cornelius Parks & Recreation Department and its partners. As the community continues to embrace tennis, the Bailey Road Park complex is poised to play a pivotal role in nurturing talent and fostering a love for the game.
