Detroit Pistons Academy brings youth basketball camp to Battle Creek

A youth basketball camp featuring instruction from the Detroit Pistons Academy is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Full Blast Recreation Center in Battle Creek.

The event is being hosted by B² (B-Squared) Foundation, according to a community announcement. The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades 3-9 and will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the recreation center, 35 W. Hamblin Ave. in Battle Creek.

Foundation leaders said in the announcement that bringing the Pistons Academy to Battle Creek aligns with the organization's efforts to expand access to youth sports and enrichment opportunities for young people in the region. Community partners and sponsors helped make participation opportunities available for youth from Battle Creek, Albion, Kalamazoo and surrounding communities.

“This is bigger than basketball for us,” Brittney R. Dowdy, executive director of B² (B-Squared) Foundation, said in the announcement. “We want young people in our community to know that they deserve access to high-quality experiences and opportunities. Having the Detroit Pistons Academy come to Battle Creek gives our kids the chance to learn, compete, build confidence and create a memory that may stay with them for years.”

The camp will provide basketball instruction connected to the Detroit Pistons Academy while giving participants an opportunity to develop skills and learn from academy staff.

B² (B-Squared) Foundation said in the announcement that the event is part of its broader effort to increase access to youth sports, education and enrichment experiences regardless of a family's financial circumstances.

“We are building relationships that connect our local youth to opportunities beyond what they may normally have access to,” Dowdy said. “When organizations, businesses and communities work together on behalf of young people, we can make an impact that reaches far beyond one Saturday.”
