Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo was set to pinch-hit for Ildemaro Vargas on Tuesday night, Aug. 11, if needed, but was not used. He is, however, back in the lineup on Wednesday, Aug. 12, after sitting out the previous night with knee soreness.
"(He) was really champing at the bit to get back in there yesterday," manager Torey Lovullo said of Perdomo. "Felt like it was the right thing to do to give him the day off."
Outfielder Jordan Lawlar played a full game at Double-A Amarillo, getting four at-bats while playing left field, and reported feeling no limitations from his right hamstring, Lovullo said. Lawlar was scheduled to play again on Aug. 12.
Right-handed pitcher Justin Martinez threw 11 pitches in one inning of work at Triple-A Reno. Outfielders Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Tommy Troy took part in a bridge camp game, with four at-bats for each.
Gurriel was the DH at Salt River Fields and Troy played center field.
Lovullo said players such as Lawlar and Martinez, who are close to a return, are getting healthy and added: "We are getting ready to layer them in."
The conversations about how to get those players back into major league action started with the impending start of their rehab assignments a couple of weeks ago.
"We're going to be a little bit challenged," Lovullo said. "We're raising the standard here, because we have really good players that are going to get healthy, and we have really good players that are here (in the majors) right now."
Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen asked Lovullo to look at different lineup combinations and what it might look like with a returning player in the batting order, and also how to structure their playing time.
Lawlar will be used in center field and left field, Lovullo said, and can be deployed in the infield in an emergency.
Relief pitcher Drey Jameson is recovering from a blister, but will throw a bullpen session with the blister covered, Lovullo said.

At Chase Field: Kelly has had back-to-back outings with four walks, but he kept his team in the game against the Dodgers in his most recent start with a run allowed on two hits in 5⅔ innings of a game the Diamondbacks rallied to win. Kelly hasn't made it through six innings in a start in more than a month, and he's up to 50 walks this season with 80 strikeouts. Some cramping forced him out of his last start. ... Feltner is 1-4 in his last five starts and hasn't made it to five innings since July 25. He is 1-3 with a 6.27 ERA against the Diamondbacks in his career.
