Dave Portnoy never shies away from speaking his mind, and he wasn’t going to stay silent after Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White addressed the backlash she received for her comments on the incident between Sophie Cunningham and DiJonai Carrington last week, where the latter’s flagrant foul on Cunningham was exacerbated by a “white privilege” comment by Carrington.
“The hate, the fear mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided,” Stephanie White told reporters on Tuesday, referencing the criticism she has faced for apparently not supporting her players.
Portnoy responded to White’s comments with a stern message on X.
“I am a legit Fever fan. If she just said “I shoulda defended Sophie (MY PLAYER) and not DJ so I get why our fans our pissed at me” maybe I can accept the apology. But this didn’t really feel like an apology. More her yelling at us for trying to divide the locker room or something. Like blaming us for DJ tweeting “white privilege” in the locker room. That’s what is dividing people. Fever fans and players get blamed for everything under the sun. We’re not trying to divide anybody but it’s Fever vs the world and we want a coach who feels and acts that way.”
Jason Whitlock Comments on Stephanie White’s StatementSports analyst Jason Whitlock also made his feelings known about the statement from the Fever coach.
“Did y’all notice none of the anger or profanity was directed at DiJonai Carrington? Still can’t denounce DiJonai or express support for Sophie! Not allowed,” Whitlock wrote.
White’s comments will likely fuel the discourse as the WNBA navigates a challenging period.
