In a standout performance during his rehabilitation assignment, Chicago Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera showcased his talent by throwing five no-hit innings for the Tennessee Smokies against the Rocket City Trash Pandas on August 11. Despite Cabrera's impressive outing, the Smokies ultimately lost the game 6-1 at Covenant Health Park in Knoxville.
Cabrera, who is recovering from an injury, struck out seven batters and retired 13 consecutive hitters during his time on the mound. The only blemish on his record came from a two-out walk in the first inning, which was quickly forgotten as he dominated the Trash Pandas lineup. Smokies manager Lance Rymel praised Cabrera's performance, stating, "That's kind of how you draw it up. Really, really electric stuff," highlighting the impact of Cabrera's pitching on the game.
Unfortunately for the Smokies, the game took a turn after Cabrera exited. The Trash Pandas capitalized on the Smokies' bullpen, scoring six unanswered runs. Daniel Palencia, who was also on a rehab assignment for the Cubs, entered the game but struggled, walking several batters and allowing the game-tying run after hitting a batter with a pitch. Rymel noted that Palencia's performance was hampered by his inability to find the strike zone consistently, saying, "I think if you ask him it’s just the walks there. The output stuff was good. He was throwing that thing but just not in the zone enough."
The Smokies managed to score their only run of the game in the second inning, thanks to an RBI double from Ariel Armas. However, this was not enough to secure a victory, as the Trash Pandas took control of the game in the later innings.
In addition to Cabrera's strong showing, the game marked the Double-A debuts for Smokies center fielder Kane Kepley and third baseman Dom Krupinski, both of whom were called up after the trade deadline. While they combined for just one hit in six at-bats, Kepley expressed enthusiasm about playing at Covenant Health Park, stating, "This place is beautiful. The facilities are great. It’s been a great time."
The Smokies now find themselves trailing 1-0 in the series against the Trash Pandas. As they look to bounce back in the upcoming games, fans can look forward to a series of promotions at Covenant Health Park, including All-You-Can-Eat Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday, aimed at enhancing the game-day experience.
Currently, the Smokies have already secured a playoff spot by winning the first half of the Southern League North and are positioned in second place in the second half standings. Their overall record stands at 58-51, while the Trash Pandas lead the second half with a 22-18 record. As the season progresses, every game remains crucial for both teams, especially as they vie for playoff positioning.
