With Anthony Richardson starting the preseason finale against Detroit, Riley Leonard took over in the second quarter for the Indianapolis Colts. As of now, the backup quarterback role is still up for grabs.
Let's take a closer look at Leonard's performance.
Leonard completed just 3-of-7 passes for 48 yards, and he tossed an interception. That stat line, however, doesn't quite paint the entire picture.
Leonard seemed to face a lot more pressure than Richardson did, and in two instances, he turned a negative play into a positive one while scrambling.
Sparking a touchdown drive, Leonard connected with Anthony Gould on a corner route on 4th-and-6. He also had a nice throw to Deion Burks along the sidelines.
That said, while pressure led to the interception, that's a play where Leonard tried to do too much.
Leonard finished the preseason completing 20-of-42 passes for 199 yards with two interceptions.
Like Richardson, there were flashes from Leonard this summer, but a lot of inconsistency as well. Shane Steichen said earlier this week that he did not have a timeline for when he would announce who the backup is, but that decision is coming with the preseason wrapping up on Saturday.
