EL PASO, Texas – FC Juárez has officially appointed Argentine coach Gustavo Lema as their new manager, as announced on Wednesday, September 2. Lema takes over from Salvador Valero, who had been serving as interim manager for the past month following the dismissal of Pedro Caixinha.
Gustavo Lema arrives at FC Juárez with a wealth of experience in Mexican soccer. Over the last two decades, he has built a strong reputation as an assistant coach, most notably working alongside Antonio Mohamed. During his time with various clubs, he contributed to securing three Liga MX championships: one with Xolos de Tijuana in 2012, another with Club América in 2014, and a third with CF Monterrey during the Apertura 2019. Additionally, under his guidance, Monterrey claimed the Copa MX title in both 2017 and 2019.
In December 2023, Lema transitioned into a head coaching role with Pumas UNAM, where he experienced considerable success. His leadership led the team to three consecutive Liguillas, culminating in a commendable fourth-place finish in the Apertura 2024. Notably, Pumas boasted the best defensive record in the tournament during his tenure. Most recently, Lema managed Audax Italiano in the Chilean top flight, further expanding his coaching portfolio.
However, Lema now faces a significant challenge with FC Juárez, who are currently struggling in the Liga MX 2026 Apertura. The Bravos find themselves at the bottom of the league table, having failed to secure a victory thus far this season. With an alarming record of 0-6, the team has a goal differential of -16, having scored just three goals while conceding 19.
As Lema steps into this critical role, he will need to quickly address the team's shortcomings and restore confidence among the players and supporters. The upcoming matches will be crucial for both Lema and FC Juárez as they seek to turn their fortunes around in the highly competitive Liga MX.
