Former Chiefs Offensive Lineman Cut By Atlanta After Trade

The Kansas City Chiefs traded offensive lineman Wanya Morris to the Atlanta Falcons because he wanted a chance to start, but it didn’t work out so well for Morris as he was cut by the Falcons, per a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that referenced a report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. 

The Chiefs didn’t get much back for Morris, whom they drafted in the third round back in 2023. They sent Morris and a seventh-round pick to the Falcons for a sixth-round pick, so this is close to wash. 

Atlanta did save a little money by cutting Morris, though, as he’s scheduled to make $1.432 million this season. Because he has fewer than four years of service time, he’ll pass through waivers, per Florio’s report. 

Morris played for three years for the Chiesf and he made 16 starts while appearing in 43 regular season games. There’s always the chance he could return to Kansas City as a practice squad player, as the Chiefs made a couple of cuts suggesting that possibility. 

Chief among them was Esa Pole, who was talked up by Andy Reid as a possible solution along with Chukwuebuka Godrick and Ethan Driskell at various times in camp. The Chiefs offensive line has turned into more of a scramble than it appeared to be as recently as a week ago, with the Chiefs having made trades for a pair of linemen before roste cutdowns. 

Kahlil Benson has been the big story on the O-line for Kansas City, as he appeared to be threatening Jaylong Moore, and now he’s being listed as a backup, although it was still an impressive feat for the undrafted lineman from Indiana to come from out of nowhere to make the team. 

Given all the turmoil up front, it wouldn’t be surprising for the Chiefs to go on a scavenger hunt for offensive lineman from other teams to see if there might be a fit there as well. They’re going to need to protect a less mobile version of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and there’s still the question of opening holes for new running back Kenneth Walker III. 

The Chiefs didn’t expect to be facing this many offensive question marks, but it’s hardly surprising given that they devoted the entire first half of the draft to restocking their defense. No one knows quite what this is going to look like against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14, but the one thing we do know is that it’s going to be all about Mahomes once again.
