Former Kansas basketball commit Javon Bardwell has found a new home after reopening his recruitment earlier this offseason.
Bardwell announced his commitment to Providence on Sunday, giving first-year Friars head coach Bryan Hodgson another addition to his rebuilt roster.
The highly regarded wing was originally committed to Kansas as a member of the 2027 recruiting class. Bardwell later elected to reclassify into 2026 and simultaneously backed away from his commitment to Bill Self and the Jayhawks.
Bardwell made clear at the time that his decision was not a reflection of his relationship with the Kansas coaching staff.
“This decision is not a reflection of the coaches at the University of Kansas,” Bardwell wrote in his decommitment announcement. “To Coach Bill Self, Coach Tony Bland, and Coach Jeremy Case, I want to thank you for the relationship you built with my family and me from day one. My recruitment is now open as a member of the 2026 class.”
After moving into the 2026 class, Bardwell is rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 33 overall player nationally, according to the rankings cited by Through the Phog. He is also ranked as the No. 11 small forward and No. 3 prospect from Georgia.
He now joins a Providence program entering a new era under Hodgson.
Hodgson took over the Friars after spending one season at South Florida, where he led the Bulls to a 25-9 record along with American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. Before his time at USF, Hodgson went a combined 45-28 across two seasons at Arkansas State.
Bardwell's departure left Kansas without a commitment in its 2027 recruiting class, forcing the Jayhawks to shift their attention elsewhere.
His reclassification also would have placed him in a crowded Kansas rotation for the upcoming season. The Jayhawks already feature a highly regarded group that includes Taylen Kinney, Leroy Blyden Jr., Tyran Stokes and Keanu Dawes.
Instead, Bardwell will begin his college career at Providence as Hodgson continues reshaping the Friars' roster.
