Mitchell was selected 52nd overall by the Colts after a standout collegiate career at the University of Texas. Unfortunately, his first year in the NFL was marked by limited production, as he recorded just 23 receptions on 55 targets for 312 yards, without finding the end zone. These statistics reflect the difficulties many young players face when transitioning to the professional level.
Now with the New York Jets, Smith has taken it upon himself to encourage Mitchell, who he believes has the potential to excel. Smith, who faced similar hurdles early in his own career, understands the pressure that comes with high expectations. In an interview with NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Smith stated, "Like I said, man, he has everything and all the ability to go out there and be one of the better receivers in the game. I really think he can be that. Obviously, it’s my job to make sure I put the ball in his hands and let him go do his thing. But you know, we’re still a work in progress, and I think he’s such a young player. It’s too early to write him off. He’s too young and too talented to be written off."
Mitchell's transition to the Jets has shown promise, as he has begun to carve out a role in the team's offense. After being acquired mid-season from the Colts, he demonstrated his potential by making 24 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns over eight games, averaging 12.5 yards per catch. "When these trades happen, people think that he was a throw-in, but he was never a throw-in. He was a guy that we wanted… I’ve been knowing about this player for a while, so for him to be a part of the trade, to be a part of what we’re building, he’s a true X [receiver], the body type is a true X, he has good speed, he can win one-on-one. We’re gonna try to get him the ball as much as we can," Glenn stated.
