Japan centre back Ko Itakura has returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach from Ajax Amsterdam, signing a contract until 2030, the Bundesliga club said on Thursday.
The 29-year-old is back with the Foals after one year in the Netherlands. He is the successor to Nico Elvedi after the Switzerland defender moved to Leeds United after 11 years at Gladbach.
"There were already considerations in the winter about bringing Ko Itakura back to Borussia. What sounded like a bold plan back then has now become reality," sporting director Rouven Schröder said in a statement.
Itakura said he was delighted to return having made 75 appearances for the club from 2022 to 2025.
"I am very happy to be back at Borussia. I really missed the club and when the offer came I decided straight away to return," the defender said.
Itakura's spell at Ajax was mixed. While he was often in the starting line-up, he also missed several matches due to a number of injuries.
