Hawaii High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – Aug. 24

There’s a new No. 1 team on the Islands. Following their dominant win over St. Louis, Mililani takes over the top spot and is looking very strong early on. Kahuku had a nice win as well and showed their defense has a chance to be special this year.

Below are the top 25 Hawaii high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Aug. 24.

The Trojans took over the top spot in the state ranking this week following their 42-0 blowout win over perennial state power St. Louis. Coming into the season, there was no question the Trojans had the most talent on paper, but it remained to be seen how quickly the players could gel and come together. It’s still early, but through two games, this team looks like a machine on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Hunter Fujikawa was an efficient 11-14 for 212 yards and three touchdowns in just one half of football. The Trojans will have another tough test this weekend when Oakland (Calif.) McClymonds, a traditional NorCal power comes to town on Friday.

The Red Raiders won a defensive slugfest over No. 4-rated Kamehameha 13-5. Kahuku was down 5-0 at halftime, but the defense pitched a 2nd half shut out and quarterback Lucky Suguturaga and running back Blake Alo added touchdown runs for the Red Raiders. Yards were tough to come by on both sides as Alo finished with a game-high 61 yards on 11 carries and the aforementioned touchdown. Standout sophomore Legend Toilolo had one of three interceptions for Kahuku and now has two on the year. The Red Raiders will take on Punahou, ranked No. 7 in the state, on Saturday.

The Hurricanes looked great in their season opener with an impressive 50-15 win over top 10-rated Waipahu. Running back Chazz-Michael Kapahu put on a show, rushing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Kapahu showed burst, wiggle, and ran with power. He showed very good contact balance, never went down on initial contact, and ran through arm tackles all night long. The offensive line, led by stud sophomore Shyzen Akiona, dominated the trenches, and Nikko Smith, one of the top uncommitted receivers out West, had a pair of touchdown catches. It won’t get easier for the Hurricanes as they take on No. 4-rated Kamehameha on Saturday.

The Warriors lost a tough, defensive battle to No. 2-ranked Kahuku 13-5. It was a tale of two halves, with the Warriors shutting out Kahuku in the 1st half, leading 5-0 at halftime. In the second half, the tables turned with the Red Raiders shutting out the Warriors and adding a pair of rushing touchdowns to pull out the win. Junior running back Maddox Sharrer was the lone bright spot for the Warriors’ offense, rushing for 52 tough yards on 15 carries, and standout kicker Tyler Fujimoto hit from 41 yards out for the Warriors’ lone offensive points. Kamehameha will take on No. 3-ranked Kapolei on Saturday.

The Crusaders took one on the chin against a very good Mililani team, 42-0. According to Hawaii Prep World, it’s the first time St. Louis has been shut out since 2012. The offense sputtered with four turnovers, and the defense struggled to contain the Trojans high powered passing attack. Things won’t get any easier for the Crusaders as their next three games are against national top 25 programs, starting this Saturday against Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, ranked No. 1 in the country via the Massey Ratings.

The defending state champs got back on the right foot with an impressive 56-7 win over No. 13-ranked Moanalua. Junior quarterback Jalen Kimble looked good, completing 12 of 14 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns. Hawaii commit Shaison Kupukaa had two catches, both for touchdowns and 75 yards receiving, and the offense had nearly 450 yards on the night. The defense was equally as dominant, holding Moanalua to under 100 yards of offense. Next up for the Sabres is a road game where they will head out of state to take on Saint George (Utah) Pine View.

The Buff n Blue and No. 12-ranked Kapa‘a battled to a rare 14-14 tie over the weekend. Punahou looked good early, jumping out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead, but was shut out the rest of the game. Punahou sophomore dual-threat quarterback Tai Utoafili threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Utoafili is one of the better athletes in the state and already boasts an offer from Hawaii. Running back Aaron Johnson continued his fast start to the season, rushing for 105 yards. He had four touchdowns in the Buff n Blue’s season opener two weeks ago. In one of the marquee matchups of next week, Punahou will take on state No. 2-ranked Kahuku on Saturday.

After their huge season-opening win against defending champion Campbell two weeks ago, the Marauders took one on the chin over the weekend against a really good Kapolei team, 50-15. It was a rough night for the run defense as the Marauders rushed for 350 yards on the night. Running back Lyric Anuenue and Arona Liaina added touchdowns on the ground for the Marauders. Waipahu will try to get back on track on Friday when they play host to Farrington.

The Seariders moved to 2-0 on the year with a 21-7 win over Kailua. Sophomore running back Maximus Quon-Kaleiopu was the star of the game in this one, rushing for 167 yards and a touchdown. The defense was strong as well, holding Kailua to just 14 rushing yards on the night. The Seariders will take on No. 23-ranked Roosevelt on Friday.

The Wildcats opened their season with a 24-0 win over Truckee. Senior quarterback Keenan Alani had a big night, completing 16-of-25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. Anakin Punihaole was the favorite target on the night with three catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wideout Lamichael Bronson and junior Justice Charity added touchdown receptions as well. The Wildcats have a bye this weekend and will take on Kamehameha (Hawaii) September 3.
