The Miami Heat’s offseason has gone better than the franchise likely expected.

Despite facing stiff competition for former Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, the five-time NBA champions managed to land the two-time MVP to begin the summer on a positive note.

Miami also bolstered their perimeter shooting by adding proven sharpshooter Tim Hardaway, but the fun isn’t over yet. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Heat are expected to sign a 6-foot-5 ex-Golden State Warriors star after his recent buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.

“BREAKING: Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers upon a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks,” Charania wrote on X/Twitter Friday.

“Thompson and the Mavericks navigated a buyout from his $17.5 million expiring salary after the four-time NBA champion made it clear to Dallas that he wanted to play for a contender.”

“The Heat made one of the NBA's all-time greatest shooters their top free agent priority this summer to surround Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo and waited nearly two months on his release.”

While Thompson is a shell of his former self as a perimeter defender and high-IQ scorer, he’s still among the league's most consistent long-range snipers in his late 30s. The Washington State product averaged 11.7 points per game with the Mavericks last season while connecting on 39.3% from the field and 38.3% from beyond the arc.

Given the fact that the Heat could use all the floor-spacing wings they can get ahead of the 2026-27 season, it’s safe to say that signing Thompson is arguably the wisest move the franchise could make at this juncture of the offseason.
