The Miami Heat are trying to find the final move or two to make before training camp begins. However, for some of those moves, it is not necessarily up to Miami to get a deal done.
The Heat have been linked to Klay Thompson for quite some time, and the good news for them is that they remain a potential landing spot for the four-time NBA champion.
“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.
Miami has a strong roster, but the team needs a shooter who can consistently space the floor. The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer believes the Heat are desperate to get Thompson.
“To this point the Mavs position has not changed. They would prefer to trade him (Klay Thompson). — All we know is, Miami is desperate for Klay Thompson but they want to sign him as a free agent. They would not be the only team interested," Fischer said.
For the Heat, landing Thompson would be a major addition. SI’s Blake Silverman believes Miami could ultimately be the team that lands the five-time All-Star.
“It’s no secret the 36-year-old Klay Thompson doesn’t fit the Mavericks’ plans any longer. And he likely wants to go chase another title in the twilight of his career, too. The issue is that Dallas may not be able to find a trade for Thompson and a team willing and able to take on his $17.5 million salary. That leads to a potential buyout where the veteran shooter could go where he pleases. The Heat are the most logical destination, as Miami needs depth after it gave up nearly all of its young players to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo,” Silverman wrote.
The Heat’s outlook for the season would change dramatically if they could add Thompson to space the floor for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Miami’s front office knows that adding a proven shooter could be exactly what the team needs to take another step forward.
Thompson has made $298 million throughout his career and remains one of the most accomplished shooters in NBA history. The Heat are looking forward to the upcoming season, but their lack of a lethal perimeter shooter remains a major concern. That is why adding Thompson would be so important: He could give Miami another elite scoring option and potentially turn the Heat into a legitimate title contender.
