This victory not only marked a significant upset over the defending WPIAL and state champions but also highlighted the impressive coaching of Matt Mottes, who is now in his third year as head coach.
Following this commanding performance, Mottes has been honored as the Pittsburgh Steelers Youth Football Coach of the Week for Week 1. This recognition is awarded to coaches who achieve significant victories, demonstrate community involvement, or make a lasting impact on their student-athletes.
In a congratulatory message shared by the Steelers Youth Football program, they praised Mottes for leading the Vikings to a decisive win at Tony Dorsett Stadium. The victory over Avonworth serves as a testament to the growth and development of the Hopewell program under Mottes’ leadership.
The Steelers' Coach of the Week award comes with several perks. Each recipient is invited to a Steelers home game, where they are honored on the field. Additionally, they receive a signed certificate from Steelers President Art Rooney II and head coach Mike McCarthy, along with a $2,000 donation to support their football program.
Since taking the helm in 2024, Mottes has significantly transformed the Hopewell football program. Last season, the Vikings achieved a 7-5 record, marking their first playoff appearance since 2013. They not only made it to the postseason but also won their first-round playoff game against Southmoreland, showcasing the team's resurgence.
Hopewell's success this season can be attributed to a talented roster, including standout quarterback James Armstrong, who is recognized as one of the top prospects in the country. Alongside Armstrong, players like Nasir Wade, Avery Bokor, Tre Cameron, and Aris Haniotes contribute to a formidable lineup that has high aspirations for the remainder of the season.
