A red leather ball travelling at 90 miles per hour becomes extremely difficult to pick up in gloomy conditions, and batters, wicketkeepers and close-in fielders have only a fraction of a second to react, making poor visibility a genuine injury risk.

How is bad light measured in Test matches?

There is no single, universal light reading across world cricket at which play must stop. Instead, the umpires assess conditions with their own eyes and use a light meter to support and record that judgement, rather than to dictate it.

The crucial principle is that the first reading taken when the umpires decide conditions have become unfit sets the benchmark for the rest of that match. Under section 2.8.5.3 of the ICC's Test playing conditions, meter readings may be used to determine whether the light has deteriorated or improved, and as benchmarks for the remainder of the stoppage, match or series.

This is why the threshold differs from ground to ground and even from series to series. Studies have found that the unsafe level at The Oval was lower than at Lord's, and conditions can vary between ends of the same ground depending on how the stadium was built and where the sun sets, which is precisely why no fixed global standard exists.

What is a light meter and how does it work?

A light meter is a small handheld device with a light sensor at one end and a display window at the other showing the current reading. Umpires typically stand at one end of the pitch and point it towards the sightscreen to take a measurement.

All light meters used in international cricket must be supplied by the ICC and uniformly calibrated, ensuring consistency between officials and venues. Under the playing conditions, umpires are entitled to use the readings as a guideline for determining whether the light is fit for play.

Critically, the meters do not display a marked cut-off point indicating that play must cease. They show only whether conditions have improved or worsened relative to the recorded benchmark, which means the meter supports the umpires' subjective assessment rather than replacing it.

What are the rules for bad light in Test cricket?

The governing rule is found in section 2.8 of the ICC's Test match playing conditions. Play cannot start, must be suspended immediately, or cannot restart if the on-field umpires agree that conditions are "dangerous or unreasonable".
