How social media reacted to UNC-upsetting TCU in 2026 football opener

The North Carolina Tar Heels had a golden chance in front of them on Saturday: an opportunity to start their football season with a massive upset.

UNC traveled to Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland for a 12 p.m. kickoff against TCU in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Last time the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs played, there was plenty more disappointment amongst the Carolina Blue.

That feeling quickly changed to excitement after Saturday, with North Carolina shocking TCU in a 15-10 upset driven by its shutdown defense.

UNC (1-0) allowed 10 first quarter points, a Kyle Lemmerman field goal and Jon Denman touchdown run, then its defense pitched a shutout for the remaining three quarters. The Tar Heels held a typically-explosive Horned Frogs (0-1) offense to 281 yards, highlighted by defensive line play and a MUCH-improved pass defense.

North Carolina sophomore defensive lineman Xavier Lewis was the best player on the field Saturday, leading everyone with five solo tackles and 4.5 TFLs. Star defensive end Melkart Abou-Jaoude forced a key fumble that gave UNC its final points of the day, while Syracuse transfer linebacker Derek McDonald totaled 11 tackles. The Tar Heels limited TCU to 1-of-5 on fourth-down conversions, including a failed red zone attempt late in the fourth.

The Tar Heels' offense looked significantly better under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, despite scoring just 15 points.

Billy Edwards is a major upgrade from Gio Lopez at quarterback, completing 16 passes for 232 yards. Jelani Thurman will be a dangerous tight end this fall, catching four passes for 94 yards. Jordan Shipp will be a tough WR1 to cover, hauling in five passes for 71 yards. North Carolina showcased its running back depth, with Jaylen McGill scoring his team's lone touchdown and 2025 breakout star Demon June icing the game late.

As you celebrate the rest of your weekend, take a look at several, postgame social media reactions below. People are very happy and a little shocked.

Are the Tar Heels back?!

Big win for Bill Belichek and @UNCFootball
After all the noise last year-this team looks better on both sides of the ball-good start to the season!

North Carolina football might be back, folks.

*check back a month from now*

Better coached team.

Dominated both lines of scrimmage.

Real playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Don't know what the record will be, but credit where it's due: UNC is a MUCH better team than a year ago.

Wasn’t the prettiest football, but that is a MASSIVE upset over a team that was well thought of heading in. Plenty to clean up, but this team is so far ahead of where they were last year. Excited for the rest of the season and the real possibility of making a bowl game.

— Joe Ovies (@joeovies) August 29, 2026Offseason upgrades will be a HUGE help for the 2026 Tar Heels.

Cannot be overstated how important it was for #UNC to retain DL Xavier Lewis.

The zero-star out of HS flashed as a true frosh last year and came out today with 7 tackles, 4 TFL, and 2 sacks.

His campaign for first-team All-ACC started in Ireland.

In UNC-TCU last year it was obvious the Tar Heels did not have a competitive Power 4 roster. Progress has clearly, undeniably been made. Good W for the Heels.

One note on Bill Belichick: The last time he had a real OC (Josh McDaniels) he made the playoffs.

With Mac Jones as his starting QB.

You can blame him for the OC hires since, but the Petrino/Belichick combo should have UNC much improved overall this year pic.twitter.com/CbZy899vLQ

Seems like y’all forgot…

Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of football… And it’s not even close.

Do not doubt UNC.

.@UNCFootball with the HUGE UPSET WIN....Maybe this Belichick Guy is still a great coach. #TarHeels#BaldysBreakdownspic.twitter.com/44X9UlW3H8

Bill Belichick gets his first significant win as a college coach. https://t.co/FGAMLiR19N

— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) August 29, 2026Discipline wins ballgames.

Also, UNC was the much more disciplined team today.

For over a decade, it’s seemed as though UNC hasn’t been able to get out of its own way- dumb penalties, mental mistakes, etc.

Today, outside of a couple mistakes, they were much more disciplined than TCU.

— Andrew Forrest (@Andrew_Forrest1) August 29, 2026Are you as shocked as these folks?

Carolina wins a football game against a Power four team and I literally have no idea how to act right now.

— Jon Sasser (@jsasser42) August 29, 2026

To be completely honest, I thought we were going to start 0-1.

Last season was that bad; I didn’t get much positive feedback from people who saw the team, and there were a lot of distractions.

But the boys did it.

— Ronnie McGill (@rmcgill25) August 29, 2026Kudos from the Diamond Heels!

Great start to the year boys @UNCFootball 🤝 pic.twitter.com/bolRueCczz

— Carolina Baseball (@DiamondHeels) August 29, 2026An embarrassing loss for TCU?

Sonny has a pretty good list of embarrassing losses. What am I missing?

Colorado 2023
SMU 2024
Houston 2024
K-State 2025
North Carolina 2026

— Stephen Simcox (@SimcoxStephen) August 29, 2026A happy bunch of Tar Heels!

Not gonna lie, I thought that was Drake Maye for a second. https://t.co/i0ZRl82T9V
