In a significant development for Indiana University's football team, defensive end Stephen Daley and linebacker Kellen Wyatt will be eligible to compete in the season opener against North Texas on Saturday. This comes after a Monroe Circuit Court judge granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) that allows the two players, along with six others, to participate in the game.
The TRO was issued on Friday, ensuring that Daley and Wyatt can take the field as the Hoosiers kick off their 2026 season. A subsequent hearing for a temporary injunction is scheduled for September 11, which will further address the eligibility concerns surrounding these players.
The situation stems from a broader issue affecting members of the high school class of 2022, who completed their four years of eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year. This cohort was notably excluded from the NCAA's recent rule change in June that allowed players five years to compete in five seasons. As a result, Daley and Wyatt, who both played for Indiana in the previous season, found themselves navigating a complex eligibility landscape.
Unlike other cases, such as the ongoing situation involving LSU and the SEC regarding fifth-year players, neither Daley nor Wyatt participated in NFL training camps nor sought to transfer to different schools. Daley, who was a standout defensive lineman for the Hoosiers, announced his return to the team in August after a challenging previous season. He suffered a knee injury while celebrating with fans following the Big Ten Championship game, which sidelined him for Indiana's three College Football Playoff games.
During the 2025 season, Daley was a key contributor to the Hoosiers' defense, leading the team with 19 tackles for loss and recording 5.5 sacks over 13 games. Wyatt, who played in seven games last season, also made his mark with 27 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. In addition to Daley and Wyatt, the lawsuit includes several other players, including Malik Reneau, a former basketball player for Indiana who transferred to Miami for the 2025-26 season. Reneau had a remarkable season with the Hurricanes, averaging 19 points per game and helping his team reach the second round of the NCAA tournament.
