Whether concerning or promising, the Boston Red Sox have been a somewhat polarizing team throughout much of the season.

For the most part, however, this Red Sox squad has arguably been the best team in Major League Baseball for the more important parts of the campaign.

The Red Sox have played very well over the past month and a half, even with some struggles over the past week or so.

This team has a strong chance to make the postseason if things continue as planned, but Boston will need to keep playing as well as it did a few weeks ago, at 67-58, and stay in a spot to make the playoffs via the Wild Card.

The problem with the Red Sox, if you want to call it that, is that they've been a team that's really tough to figure out.

Sometimes, they're clearly a top-five team in Major League Baseball, and perhaps the best in the American League; other times, it's almost impossible to get a feel for them.

The interesting part, however, is that the Red Sox are really good against above-average teams, which typically bodes well for playoff success.

“Since June 25, the Sox are 20-0 against teams now in possession of playoff spots. The recent slump has come against three teams that entered Sunday in last place. The Sox have proven capable of beating and losing to anyone,” Alex Speier wrote.

Good teams have to beat good teams come October, so this is more of a promising thing for the Red Sox than anything else.

Of course, there aren’t many reasons for them to be losing to some of the teams they've lost to over the past week or so, but the Pittsburgh Pirates have also impressed throughout a lot of the season, the Toronto Blue Jays are good but have been hurt, and the Athletics probably aren't as bad as their record indicates.
