OGDENSBURG — Jack Mills showcased his exceptional golfing skills as he defended his title at the St. Lawrence State Park Club Championship, defeating Gavin Moran in a closely contested finals match. Mills entered the championship with a strong sense of confidence, particularly in his putting game, which had proven to be a decisive factor throughout the tournament.

In the semi-finals, Mills demonstrated his prowess by sinking a remarkable 40-foot putt on the second playoff hole against Mason Maroney, a moment that undoubtedly bolstered his confidence heading into the finals. Moran, a senior at Ogdensburg Free Academy (OFA), had a strong summer performance on the North Country Youth Golf Tour, making his way to the finals by overcoming notable competitors, including last year’s runner-up Drew Mills, Gunnar McLellan, and Kris Berg, who has had a successful history in previous club championships.

The finals, held on a beautiful morning ideal for golf, saw Mills take control early on. He made three birdies on the front nine, finishing with an impressive score of 34. His strong performance continued on the back nine, where he secured the championship by closing out the match on the 16th hole. The ability to make crucial birdie putts was pivotal in his victory, particularly starting with a 20-foot birdie on the first hole, which set the tone for the match.

As the match progressed, Mills maintained a three-hole lead by the 13th hole, where he made another long birdie putt, putting pressure on Moran, who was unable to capitalize on his own birdie opportunity. Mills further extended his lead by winning the par-five sixth hole with another birdie, while Moran settled for a par.

Reflecting on his performance, Mills expressed satisfaction with both his play and the overall match, stating, “We started early so we would have the course to ourselves and it was a great morning for golf. My putter has really been good to me the last couple weeks. We both played consistent and smart golf.” He acknowledged the strong competition he faced, particularly highlighting Moran’s impressive journey to the finals.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Mills, not only as a repeat champion but also as a testament to his skill and determination in the sport. His performance at the St. Lawrence State Park Club Championship reinforces his status as a formidable competitor in local golf, and it will be exciting to see how he continues to develop his game in future tournaments.
