There's no question that Jared Goff has helped turn the Detroit Lions around. Since he came on the scene in 2021, this team has been on a winning streak. They made it to the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 30 years with Goff at the helm.
Last year, the Lions took a step back, of course, after losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. They went from first in the NFC North to last place. That hurt. But, Goff still had strong numbers, playing in all 17 games and finishing second in the league with 4,564 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns.
Still, the Lions' quarterback situation could get murky after this season.
Jared Goff likely remains the Lions' preferred optionDan Graziano of ESPN has released a list of quarterback predictions heading into the new season and further out, including the draft taken into consideration. He talked extensively about the Lions and Goff in the piece.
He gives Goff major props, as he should.
"Goff has been everything the Lions hoped and more since they acquired him as part of the Matthew Stafford trade following the 2020 season," he states. "He missed three games in his first season in Detroit but has started every game since -- and the Lions are 48-33-1 when Goff starts."
So, the complicated part is money. Goff is banking $55 million this season. He'll make $40 million in 2027. Also, Graziano points out that "none of his $47 million compensation for 2028 is guaranteed."
His projection is that the Lions will go well this season and they'll keep Goff on his current deal and do an extension during the 2028 offseason. That makes sense. "Maybe they look to the draft for a developmental prospect," he adds, "but at age 32 and still playing well, Goff remains their best and preferred option."
