Motherwell FC has bolstered its midfield lineup with the signing of Joe Hodge, a talented Republic of Ireland midfielder, from Portuguese club FC Tondela. Manager Alfred Johansson expressed optimism about Hodge's potential to thrive within the team's playing style, which he believes will allow the 23-year-old to further develop his skills.

Hodge has committed to a two-year contract with the option for an additional year, marking him as the eighth new addition to the Fir Park club during the summer transfer window. His arrival comes at a crucial time for Motherwell, as they look to strengthen their squad following the departures of key players Callum Slattery and Elliot Watt.

Having primarily played as a deep-lying midfielder, Hodge brings valuable experience to Motherwell. Last season, he made 26 appearances in the Primeira Liga, although Tondela faced relegation to the second tier of Portuguese football. Before his stint in Portugal, Hodge developed his skills at Manchester City's youth academy and had a brief tenure at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he played 13 matches, including six in the Premier League.

Johansson praised Hodge's capabilities, stating, "Joe is an excellent footballer who fits the profile for the type of midfielder we want in our squad." The manager highlighted Hodge's experience competing against top-tier talent in both English and Portuguese leagues, suggesting that his youth and previous achievements indicate a bright future ahead.

Hodge made his international debut for Ireland in June, further showcasing his growing reputation in the sport. His eagerness to join Motherwell stems from his observations of the team’s performances last season and their current form. He noted, "Having watched Motherwell games last season and the games this season, I’ve been itching to get involved."

As the new season approaches, Hodge is optimistic about integrating into the squad, which has seen significant changes with several new faces. He remarked on the evident cohesion among the players and the positive results they have achieved so far, stating, "As a footballer, you want to play in football teams that you feel are best suited to your qualities, and I feel this group of coaches and players are a perfect match for me." Hodge's addition is expected to enhance Motherwell's midfield depth as they aim for a successful campaign ahead.
