Kate Koval, a Ukrainian forward who played for the Louisiana State University (LSU) women's basketball team, has announced her departure from the program following the signing of Russian national Anna Minaeva. Koval's decision comes shortly after the transfer portal closed in April, a timing that has added to the complexity of her situation.
During her time at LSU, Koval made a significant impact on the court, averaging 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last season. However, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey emphasized that the decision to sign Minaeva was based on talent, despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Ukraine and Russia. In her statement regarding her departure, Koval expressed the emotional weight of her decision. "After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the LSU Women’s Basketball program and withdraw from LSU," she stated. "For me, this war is not distant or abstract," she explained, detailing the loss of family members and the destruction of her childhood home and training facilities due to missile strikes.

"The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me," she reflected.
While acknowledging the nature of college basketball roster changes, Koval insisted on the importance of staying true to her values. "This decision has not been easy. While I understand and respect that roster decisions are a part of college basketball, I have to remain true to myself, my values, and my country," she said.
Despite her departure, Koval expressed gratitude for her time at LSU, stating, "I felt I had found a home at LSU, and I am incredibly grateful for my teammates who became family, as well as my coaches, staff, professors, and the entire LSU community. I will always cherish the relationships, experiences, and memories I made there." She concluded her statement with a plea to the NCAA, hoping they would recognize the gravity of her situation and allow her to compete at another institution in the upcoming 2026-27 season.
